Can I Drink Coffee With Aligners In?
HOW IT WORKS

It's one of the first questions we hear from coffee lovers starting treatment in Bellevue, and on the Eastside, that's a lot of people. The short answer: no, you shouldn't drink coffee with your Invisalign trays in. The good news is you don't have to give up coffee at all. You just need a small tweak to your routine.
Why coffee and Invisalign trays don't mix
There are two real problems with sipping coffee while wearing your aligners.
Staining. Invisalign trays are clear, and that's the whole point: they're nearly invisible. Coffee is one of the most staining drinks there is. Sip it with your trays in and the pigment seeps into the plastic, leaving them dull, yellowed, and far more noticeable. The discoloration sits right against your teeth all day, which defeats the purpose of a discreet treatment.
Heat. Invisalign aligners are made of a thermoplastic material designed to hold a precise shape. Hot drinks can subtly warp that shape. Even a small distortion means the tray no longer fits your teeth correctly, which can slow your progress or make the aligner uncomfortable.
There's also a third issue. Coffee, especially with sugar, syrup, or cream, pools against your teeth when trapped under a tray. With less saliva able to wash it away, that raises your risk of decay and staining on the teeth themselves.
The simple fix: take them out
The rule throughout treatment is easy to remember. Aside from plain water, take your trays out before you eat or drink anything, then brush and put them back in afterward.
So your coffee routine becomes: remove your aligners, store them safely in their case, enjoy your coffee, then brush your teeth (or at least rinse well) before snapping the trays back in.

Making it work with the 22-hour rule
Invisalign works best when worn 20 to 22 hours a day, which leaves only about two hours for eating and drinking. That's the part coffee drinkers need to plan around.
A few habits keep you on track:
Drink your coffee in one sitting rather than nursing a cup over two hours. The longer your trays are out, the less time they're actually moving your teeth.
Pair coffee with a meal so a single tray-out window covers both.
Use a straw for iced coffee if you'd rather not remove your trays for a quick cold drink, though removing them is still the safest choice for staining.
Keep a travel toothbrush at work or in your bag so you can clean up and re-insert quickly.
Rinse with water if you genuinely can't brush right away. It's not a substitute for brushing, but it helps until you can.
What about tea, soda, and wine?
The same logic applies to anything other than plain water. Tea, soda, juice, sports drinks, and red wine all either stain, contain sugar and acid, or both. Hot tea adds the same warping risk as coffee. Trays out for all of them.
Keep your trays and your smile looking their best
Drinking coffee with Invisalign in is one of the most common slip-ups, and it's also one of the easiest to avoid. Take the trays out, enjoy your coffee, brush, and pop them back in. Your aligners stay invisible, your teeth stay healthy, and your treatment stays on schedule.
